Frame by Frame Film Transfer

Frame by frame transfer is available for all 8mm, super8, sound and silent.

Frame by frame transfer is the most ideal transfer if you would like to make stills from your footage. We highly recommend having your home movies transferred to a digital tape or hard drive so that you can capture stills from the images. With frame by frame transfer, the frames will be 99.9% accurate, without blended frames. This means that you can pause the footage at any time and the paused picture will be crisp and clear.

Home Movie Depot uses our unique, proprietary projectors to transfer the film. The projectors have been modified with a PLL circuit which locks the shutter speed to the video phase. Then, we can run the projector at 20 frames per second. With a three bladed shutter, this becomes 60 fields per second. We then extract the original frame from the 60 field-per-second video signal and duplicate it, so that the final NTSC DV signal is a stream of progressive pictures of film.

We modified Kino to all this in real-time while capturing, along with other processing such as gamma adjustment. The resulting transfer is ultimately a 2:2 pulldown transfer, resulting in a picture that retains the most film-like aesthetics.
