Happy Mother’s Day Contest

May 11th, 2009

Mom always thinks of others before herself. We found a box of old slides yesterday, and we really enjoyed going through them all. Pictures of her when she was a teenager, and when she got married, and when we were kids. She thought about getting them put on DVD to give to my brother and sister and myself. It would be wonderful if we could surprise her and get it done for her. She lost her husband recently and this would be great.

Thank you for your consideration, for my mom, Deborah Bell.

P.S. Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mother’s Day 5/7/2009

I guess I’m like everyone else; I think I’ve got the best Mom in the world. But I have good cause to think this way—she is truly the most sincere, caring, loving, and nurturing person that I know. Now, I count myself as a pretty unemotional guy, but there was one poignant moment with my Mom that really got to me. It occurred when I left home to go to college.

As Mom helped me pack those last few days, made sure all my shirts were perfectly ironed, gave me tips on basic cooking techniques, and instructions on how not to mix my colored and white laundry, she seemed pretty serene about the whole moving thing. But then on D-day, after the car was completely packed and I hugged everybody and said goodbye, I glanced back at the house to wave to my parents and little brother standing on the front porch. Mom could hold it back no longer and she burst into tears, trying hard not to let me see her. I did. It dawned on me at that moment how special my Mom was to me, and how precious she made “home” for our family. I’ve grown up a lot since that day, but I’ve never quit learning about life, love, and family from the greatest teacher I ever had, my Mom.

MOM ~ Never forget how special you are…YUP ~ NEVER!  Thank you for so many things, not the least of which, being real, understanding, and caring. I woke up the other morning thinking; the best gift a parent can give their child is assurance of their unconditional support. The best gift a child can give back to their parent as a result is their fulfillment and happiness. Sometimes it takes awhile to truly figure life out, I suppose if you’re really lucky, you might get about half of it. You’ve been there throughout my journey, and I may not always be so good at saying or showing how much I appreciate that…YOU! When I do, that’s part of the half I got! Thanks for your support mom ~ know that I’m happy! :)

I love you mom! Have a beautiful day.

My mother, Laura, deserves a free gift box because she is a terrific mother..that’s easy!  But having all the old home movies my father took on 8mm and Super-8 transferred on DVD would make her the happiest mom in the world – and what child doesn’t want to see his Mom happy?   My dad, the “videographer”, passed away 13 years ago (at age 68, one month before my wedding).  My younger brother Michael died at age 24 twenty-five years ago (from a brain tumor).  Seeing them both come to “life” again on DVD would help ease the sadness my 81-year old Mom has been through since they’ve been gone.  On top of that, she’s a recent cancer survivor…imagine finding out you have breast cancer at age 80 and having to undergo surgery!  And she does battle with the everyday aches and pains that come with age.    We’ve talked about your special offer, but with the economy, we haven’t been able to afford it.  If you want to see true appreciation from an entire family, please award my mom the free gift box.  Thank you, in advance.

My mother deserves a free gift box because…

When central casting sends out an alert for the prototypical Brooklyn-accented, gray-haired Mom, they’ve got my Mother in mind.  Loud yet loving, stern yet sublime – as quick with a wagging finger as she was with a kiss on the cheek, Mom is my hero.  In the late 1950s she became the rarest of all breeds – a single parent – and somehow managed to raise two boys who are successful, happy and still adhere to their strong values.  To all those who say that life is tough, my Mom is an example of perseverance overcoming difficulty and as evidence that a strong moral compass is the best tool that a parent can ever give a child.

My mother deserves a free gift box because she has THE VERY BEST INTENTIONS.

She intends to have the house clean, but dog hair, lots of paperwork and a busy life take over very quickly.

She intends to clean out that hall closet and organize all her old slides. But the project seems so huge and overwhelming that she chooses to finish more pressing projects first.

She intends to quickly put together a PowerPoint presentation for someone. Months later she’s still receiving photos to add, fighting technology to get the music to play in the right place, trying to modify the presentation so it’s shorter than a movie, all while keeping everyone involved happy.

When my mom babysits the grandkids, she intends to wash the dogs with them, have a picnic and campfire, visit Grandpa at work, plant some flowers with them, do “Kids in the Kitchen”, read lots of books, have warm cookies before bed… Obviously this does not all get done in one day.

My mother intends to be a valuable, contributing part of society. Here my mom and I have a difference of opinion. She sometimes feels she is not accomplishing this. I disagree. I see her teaching countless students German, raising dogs for Canine Companions, doing the books for her husband’s company, Expert Electric. She stops to talks to neighbors, she quilts, she swims, she goes to church. She is a huge part of her community.

My mother intends to exercise a half hour every day. She followed this routine for decades. Now she in confronted with MS and back surgery. UNFAIR!

I think intentions are what would be done in a perfect world. But we all know we are not living in a perfect world. Sometimes real life gets in the way and even the very best intentions can’t be put into action. My mom’s intentions make her human, and to me lovable.

I love my mom and her intentions.

What can I say?  I DO have the best mother in the world.

She has endured the pain of giving birth to thirteen children, me being the first.  With me setting the example, what a bunch of ragamuffins we were growing up.  The pain of her oldest going off to Vietnam, making it back only to have her youngest killed by a hit and run driver while he was home on leave.  The pain of being in the car when her husband was killed years later in an automobile accident after 62 years of marriage.  The pain of the enormous recover time and constant hurt she endures every day from that event.

Not a whimper and not a complaint, and she still lights up the room when she enters because she is as energetic and upbeat as a 16-year-old girl.  Eighty-six years have not dampened her outlook on life and I was most fortunate to have known her.  I can only dream of having the exuberance for life that she has after all these years.  And the twelve remaining children all came out great, despite my leadership.

I often joke with her about how tough it is to have a mother that is 86 years old.  She always comes back with, “Not as bad as having a baby that is 65!”.

Happy Mother’s Day to her !

Mother’s Day Contest – Nancy

My mom deserves a free gift box because she is an extraordinary individual. Not only does she give of her herself to her family, but she is a devoted community volunteer. My mom rarely has an idle day from her community based volunteer programs. She loves to prepare items for individuals in need, contribute to a soup kitchen with a portion of a meal, volunteer at church, crochet items for a church fair, and provide reading materials to children who otherwise would not have access to books (outside their school). My mom is a forever giver of her time, talents and treasures to others, so she can affect someone’s life to the better. She has been involved in flu clinics and other activities sponsored by the Womens’ Club within our town. And heaven knows, she is also a Red Hat Society member! She does make time for herself and my dad, but truly devotes her retiree schedule to doing for others.  How nice it would be for her to be rewarded something in return. She rarely expects anything in return, yet generously gives of her self unconditionally. I think my mom is a special person and I imagine all the community organizations with which she volunteers, think rather highly of her as well. Despite multiple medical conditions, she manages to keep going and is certain to always have a project underway. She truly is a remarkable woman!
